  Relaxing Alternatives Wellness Center: Shiatsu

Shiatsu
The actual Japanese meaning of the word Shiatsu is "finger pressure". Shiatsu is a method of using finger pressure on the body's meridian lines and acupressure points to affect and balance the energy flow. This energy is called Ki in Japanese, Chi in Chinese, and Prana in India. It has been called "subtle energy", "Orgone energy", and "life energy" in the West.

According to Oliver Cowmeadow in his book, The Art of Shiatsu, there is an energetic definition of health:

1. Having an approximately even distribution of Energy in all the Meridians...the amount of energy in all parts of the body is balanced.

2. Energy is flowing, rather than being blocked or trapped. Life is Energy in movement.

3. Having a strong flow of Energy. The more Energy we have within us, the greater our physical vitality and stamina, mental positivity and clarity, and the wider and deeper our consciousness.

Shiatsu applies pressure to acupressure points with the aim of:

preventing and curing illness by stimulating the body's natural recouperative powers;
eliminating toxins;
promoting general good health.

Shiatsu is a specialized system of touching to effect healing. Shiatsu is received while wearing light-weight clothing. Each person has a different reaction to the treatment. If you have low energy, the treatment may give you increased alertness. If you are tense or stressed, it can help you come to a point of balance and relaxation.

Benefits

Shiatsu has shown positive results with:

back pain (including sciatica);
headaches and/or migraines;
general aches, pains, or chronic tension;
insomnia;
menstrual pain or irregularity;
low libido or vitality; and
negative moods, like depression, anxiety, or worry.

A shiatsu session lasts an hour. We recommend that recipients avoid eating 60-90 minutes before the treatment.

Prices: 30 min-$50; 1 hr-$85
